Hypothesis, Law, & Theory

I'm sure you've heard someone say, 'I have a theory about that.' It usually means they have an idea that might explain something, but those theories have about the same chance of being off-the-wall as they do being on track. In science, a theory has a specific meaning. Other terms, like 'hypothesis' and 'law' are also carefully defined. Can you state the difference between a scientific theory and a law? Basically a theory is a well-accepted hypothesis or else generalizes a group of hypotheses. It can be used to explain something. Laws can be used to make predictions, but they don't offer any explanation of how things work.
